On Thursday February 5th St.George’s hosted the second game of the St. George’s vs. Vancouver Collage series. The grade 8’s, 9’s, 10’s and varsity team all took on their rivals V.C. in the Dixon Gym. All of the games meant so much towards each team’s season as provincials are just around the corner.

The Grade 8’s came into the game ranked second in the province and knocking off the number one seed Eugene Reimer the day before. Coach Brodan Theil and his 8’s did not disappoint as they came out with a 65-39 victory. Thomas Chen lead the way with 16 points as the grade 8’s never looked back from the opening tip. A few minutes later the Grade 9’s tipped off. The 9’s had a slow start to the game and were down 14 points at halftime. The team showed resilience and came storming back in the second half. In the end, the 9’s came up just short losing 46-43. It was a great battle by the 9’s but the game showed that they truly missed their star William Lin as he was out due to injury.

The third game of the series featured the Grade 10 team. The 10’s came into the game against Vancouver College on a 2 game losing streak. The team got bumped from the #3 seed to the #6 seed in the province. The 10’s were hungry to get the 2 game slump off their backs, and had the chance to be first place in their league. Last time the 10’s played Vancouver College they won by one point on the road. This game at home went down to the wire too. At half time, the 10’s were down 25-22. The 10’s had V.C. right where they wanted them. In the last few minutes of the game saints was up by 8 and the game seemed to be over. V.C. came roaring back with 2 threes to stay alive. With 3.5 seconds left in the game, Noah King made a free throw to put the 10’s up by one. In the end, Justin Huang lead the way with 14 points, as the Grade 10’s beat V.C. 47-46.

The final game of the night, the senior game, was the main attraction. The honourable mention ranked St. George’s were up against the #1 ranked Vancouver College. This rivalry has always been fierce, but the opportunity to beat the #1 team in the province made the rivalry even more exciting. The Saints were craving this win after a tough loss to the Irish two weeks previous. The game was close, but the Saints had a strong performance especially Wesley Graham who finished the night with 31 points. Everyone in the gym whether they were on the floor, on the bench or in the stands, were ecstatic. The energy was incredible and the competition even more so. The Saints finished on top, defeating the Irish with a score of 79-66. This game is one that will surely not be forgotten.

This was a remarkable night in the St. George’s, Vancouver College rivalry. The home crowd for Saints was amazing and the results did not disappoint. All the teams at the school are getting prepared for the final run to provincials. We wish all the teams luck!
